Abstract:

People have been traveling into space for forty years. This presentation will discuss the evolution of foods developed for spaceflight and how the goals of the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz, and Space Shuttle programs have influenced the foods required. In addition, the contributions of regenerative systems to grow food and process wastes in space to support long duration programs such as Moon or Mars missions will be introduced.

Biography:

Eric Ryden received a B.S. in Science (Biology) from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1986. He has ten years experience in the food industry working as a food technician and food technologist in new product development and as a technical sales representative for food processors and food ingredient manufacturers..
