Topic: “Honeywell CBRN Catalytic Oxidation (CATOX): Status of CATOX Technology for Collective Protection”
Abstract:
Surplus explosives, propellants, and chemical warfare agents traditionally have been disposed of by open burning, open detonation, and incineration. In recent years, however, increasing concern over potential adverse environmental impact of these approaches has led to the development of alternative demilitarization technologies. Industry has developed several catalytic processes that can be used to demilitarize and dispose of these materials as well as toxic industrial chemicals in a safe and environmentally sound manner.
Biography:
Russell W. Johnson works for Honeywell International as Corporate Fellow, the highest technical level at the company. He is also Chief Scientist, Demilitarization Technology. He has led the technology development effort for the company in demilitarization of propellants, explosives, and chemical agents. Dr. Johnson has worked across the corporation in aerospace, air purification, emission control, chemicals, fluorochemicals, petrochemicals and fuels over the last 30+ years. He has received 47 patents and has a large number of technical publications. Dr. Johnson earned a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Colorado. Dr. Johnson’s area of specialty is in applying catalysis and separations to chemical process technology. He was awarded American Chemical Society Heroes of Chemistry Award in 1997 for efforts in the area of environmentally sound manufacturing and demilitarization. He has served twice as Chair of the Chicago Section of the American Chemical Society, as the Chair of the ACS Communications and Public Relations Committee, and on the National ACS Division of Petroleum Chemistry. He currently serves on the Council of the American Chemical Society.

Greek Family Style Dinner--
Appetizers: Saganaki (Kaseri cheese flamed in brandy), Gyros (roasted slices of lamb and beef), Taramosalata (fish roe blended with lemon and olive oil); traditional Greek salad.
Main course: Vegetarian Spinach-Cheese Pie, Vegetarian Pastitsio (Macaroni baked with broccoli, Bechamel sauce and Kefalotiri), Dolmades (vine leaves stuffed with rice, meats and herbs), Rotisserie-roasted lamb served with rice pilaf and roasted potatoes.
Desserts: Baklava (flaky layers of Phyllo baked with nuts and honey) and Galaktobouriko (flaky layers of Phyllo with vanilla custard and baked with syrup.
