In 1993 the American Chemical Society Board of Directors and the Council created a new Joint Board-Council committee on minority activities in the chemical sciences. The responsibilities for this Committee are as follows:
- Oversee American Chemical Society programs devoted or related to minority issues
- Develop a long-range plan to ensure increased participation of minority chemical profession and in the Society at all levels
- Study and make recommendations on the current status of minorities in the ACS and in the chemical sciences.
- Promote and recognize the professional accomplishments of minorities in the Chemical sciences and in ACS.
- Increase the interest of minority chemical professionals in the work of the Society.
