The February Meeting is a joint meeting with the
Younger Chemists Committee. The topic of this meeting, genomes, is a relatively
new area for chemists. This area is almost certain to have far-ranging impact
on many areas of medicine...and chemistry. It also highlights the role of
chemistry and the emerging nature of multidisciplinary research.
Abstract:
Genomes, the full collection of sequences coding
the genetic information for an organism, are very dynamic. Many genes
change quite drastically over time and these changes determine how organisms
differ in the way they do. The development of features unique to an organism
are contingent upon genetic changes between those organisms. Here we investigate
the influence of new gene origination on the development of sex chromosomes
over time. While
in mammals the X chromosome has been shaped strongly by gene duplication, the
chicken genome shows a different pattern that seems shaped more by constraints
on the ability to form and maintain novel genes.
Biography: J.J.
Emerson is an advanced Ph.D. student in the Department of Ecology & Evolution
at the University of Chicago. He received his BA from Rice University in
2000 with majors in both Biochemistry and in Ecology & Evolution. He
is currently finishing his thesis on the influence of gene duplications on the
evolution of genomes, and will graduate in Fall 2005. J.J. is currently
funded by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and an NSF Doctoral Dissertation
Improvement Grant. |
