The Chicago Section ACS in 2000 recognized four chemists of international prominence for their significant contributions to the profession. On May 19, The Section presented the Josiah Willard Gibbs Medal Award to Nicholas J. Turro, the William P. Schweitzer Professor of Chemistry and Co-Chair of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry at Columbia University. Each year a panel of 12 nationally renowned chemists selects the Gibbs honoree. Also in 2000, the Section partnered with the University of Chicago to present the 54th Stieglitz Award to Joanna Fowler of Brookhaven National Laboratory on Nov. 17, and with Northwestern University to present the Basolo Medal to James P. Collman, Daubert Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University, on Oct. 6. The second woman to win the Stieglitz Award, Fowler has conducted pioneering research into the effects of drugs on the human brain. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Collman is an internationally honored inorganic chemist whose broad research interests encompass projects that reach across the face of chemistry. The Stieglitz (established in 1940) and Basolo (established in 1991) awards improve the Section’s relationship with top educational institutions and provide an opportunity for Section members to meet and hear from leaders in the profession. Northwestern and the Chicago Section recently reached an agreement to present the Basolo Award at a joint meeting each fall. In addition, the Section presented its own Distinguished Service Award on April 14 to the prolific research scientist Ellis K. Fields, past president of the national American Chemical Society, who retired from Amoco Chemical Co. in 1992 after securing 232 patents and writing 126 publications.
